Discovering Bikram Yoga

Nine years ago, my yoga journey led me to Bikram yoga. I was experimenting with different types of yoga, trying to find the one that felt like home. The first few Bikram sessions were a revelation. I had no idea a yoga practice could last 90 minutes in such intense heat! I was envious of those yogis who left the class drenched in sweat while I looked like I’d just stepped out of a light drizzle. My curiosity about whether I could ever sweat like that drove me to commit to almost a decade of Bikram yoga.

What have I gained?

From my yoga practice, I’ve gained mental wellness, positive energy, and a more open, less judgmental mindset. If you had asked me three years ago what yoga had given me, I wouldn’t have had an answer. I knew I had to keep going, even if I didn’t understand why. It might sound strange, but it took me years to find that answer. Every time I push myself to go to the studio, even when I’m tempted to skip, I come out feeling rejuvenated. The flood of oxygen to my brain brings fresh ideas, increases my productivity at work, and gives me the clarity to navigate daily challenges. Yoga has taught me that we are ever-changing, from one moment to the next, and that what you perceive is not always reality. Making it to the studio, no matter what, is the first step toward a brighter day.

Greatest struggle and accomplishment

My greatest struggle has been trying the right way for postures. Even after all these years, I’m still waiting for that “Aha!” moment, yet I remain hopeful. This year has been the most rewarding for me as a yogi. I signed up for my first 60 Day Challenge, started attending the 5:30 am classes regularly (despite the temptation to hit snooze,) and even tackled double sessions, which shattered my self-doubt. Completing the 60 Day Challenge ahead of time feels incredible. There’s nothing like surpassing your own expectations! When it gets harder, it becomes manageable. When it seems impossible, it becomes unstoppable.

Advice for new students

Be kind to yourself. Yoga isn’t easy, and it’s important to move at your own pace. Think of yourself as the driver of your life, curious about how your body responds to each practice. Remember, health is something only you can cultivate for yourself. It’s never too late to start practicing yoga!

Life outside of yoga

Outside of yoga, I love volunteering for my profession. I lead a group of volunteers who organize events and programs for professionals. I also enjoy visiting undergraduates and sharing perspectives on career options after their graduation. Additionally, I recently learned to ski during the 2023 season. It’s incredibly fun to enjoy both the hottest and coldest sports!
