How did you first discover Bikram yoga?

I like running as an exercise and was a regular long-distance runner with one full and multiple half marathons under my belt over about 12 years. I never realized how running affects the body if you do not do the necessary complementary exercises. Deepa helped me discover Bikram Yoga to complement the running activity. With a lot of “encouragement” from her, I made it to the studio in April 2013.

What have you gained from your yoga practice?

I can focus better on any activity at hand that helps me make better choices in life. Being present in the moment is the other benefit that’s complementary to this. On the physical side, I feel Bikram Yoga helps me improve my fitness even more than running has. It has helped me manage a meniscus tear in my right knee for a few years now.

What has been your greatest struggle or greatest accomplishment?

Missing this practice during COVID times was the greatest struggle for me. I did join the parking lot practices a few times and also tried the online class version. Those helped to a small extent, but returning to the studio in March 2021 was a great feeling.

What advice would you give to new students or those struggling with their practice?

BREATHE and pay attention to instructions!!! That combination works. Be regular in your practice and pay attention to the posture form.

What do you like to do outside of yoga?

I am an outdoor, sports-loving person. During COVID, I rediscovered my liking for hikes. While I continue to run 3-4 times a week, I have added regular hiking to the schedule. I love watching football and basketball with Deepa and our son Ameya and other friends and family.
